Toronto’s Yorkville Mural

I spent Saturday, August 27th attending Toronto’s Yorkville Murals. This is an annual cultural event that runs from August 20-28th which celebrates contemporary muralism and public art.

This project focuses on making Yorkville a landmark in Toronto for public art and an ultimate tourist destination. The event was visually stimulating and spoke to the use of public art as a way to increase the value of space.

The YVM Block Party showcased three artists in real time working on individual murals;

Money Zakhour @monyzak_

SMOLIK @thatlosersmolik

Speaking with volunteers and staff at the event, the organization; Yorkville Murals focuses on connecting the right artist for the right project. Taking murals to the finish line that successfully speak to the client's interests and the artist's values.

I met two super amazing women who offered to take my photo! We got to talking and they both gave me some recommendations for places to go on my travels. Coincidentally they are from Zimbabwe and traveled extensively in South Africa which is one of my destinations. Just goes to show you can find connections everywhere! All you have to do is being willing to take that first step outside your comfort zone. Or if you’re like me your constantly talking all the time anyways asking people question!

Artist Sage Barnes @sage_barnes was having volunteers participate in a piece similar to the style of his most popular works. It was a great way to allow the audience to become involved with the event and have fun! You could see the joy on each of these participants' faces and I loved getting to hear the people cheer one another on as they engaged with the medium.

Personally, I absolutely love participatory work! I think that it leaves a long-lasting impression on its viewers, deeper contemplation on the piece and the artist's practice as a whole.

** Thank you for reading! This event has sparked a post called “Public Art as an Asset” but before that be on the lookout for my next post which will include Kensington Market — Pedestrian Day!**
